Can You Drive a Luton Van With a Normal Car Licence?
The answer is yes, as long as you passed your driving test on or after the 1st of January 1997. This means you will have the category B entitlement on your driving licence and so you can legally drive a Luton van that has a GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of up to 3.5 tonnes.
If you passed your test earlier than the 1st of January 1997 then you will be able to legally drive a vehicle that has a greater GVW – up to 7.5 tonnes.
What is within the Category B Entitlement?
Although everyone can drive a Luton van if they have a normal car licence, the category B entitlements are different for some:
For People Those Who Passed The Driving Test On Or After 1st January 1997
- You can drive a vehicle with a maximum GVW up to 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes). This is a Luton van-sized vehicle or smaller.
- You can also drive any vehicle with a GVW of up to 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes) that has fewer than 8 passenger seats: a minibus.
- If you are over 21, Category B also permits you to ride a motor tricycle that has a power output of up to 15kW.
- You can tow a trailer weighing up to 750kg, so long as the maximum authorised mass of both vehicle and trailer is less than 3,500kg.
For People Who Passed Their Test Before 1st January 1997
- They can do all the above plus your maximum authorised mass (combined GVW) is 8,250kg rather than 3,500kg.
